Roman Reigns is set to face CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42. This rivalry has been exciting so far and this is a blockbuster match perfect for WrestleMania’s grandeur. However, the original plans were for the OTC to face his former rival Cody Rhodes at The Show of Shows this year. And this should have been the direction!!
Reigns won the Men’s Royal Rumble this year in Saudi Arabia, setting the internet in a frenzy. He should have chosen to go after the Undisputed WWE Championship, the very title that he created history with. There are several reasons why WWE should have booked Roman and Cody at this year’s Mania instead of pitting the OTC against CM Punk.
Thanks for the submission!
Here are three big reasons why Roman Reigns should have faced Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42:
#3. Roman Reigns should ignite a timeless rivalry with fresh sparks
The rivalry between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes has been poetry in motion and none can deny that. A major reason why they should have collided this year at WrestleMania is due to both superstars’ fresh character arcs. Reigns is no longer a heel who hides between his faction and Rhodes is no longer chasing his underdog story. A match in the post-Bloodline era could have been historic.
WWE could have easily delayed the CM Punk program and instead tapped into the rich history that both superstars have had. It would have made more sense and guaranteed massive mainstream appeal and ticket sales in Las Vegas. Roman vs. Cody could explore fresh angles like jealousy, redemption, or a potential role reversal, keeping both characters evolving.
#2. To counterbalance the void left by Paul Heyman
One of the major aspects of the CM Punk and Roman Reigns rivalry is Paul Heyman, as the latter was the reason it all began in the first place. The Wiseman, without a doubt, should have been playing a major role in this feud and its buildup and there was so much to explore. However, that’s not happening. Heyman is completely absent from this storyline as he is busy with Seth Rollins and The Vision ahead of WrestleMania 42.
Without Paul Heyman’s involvement, there was no point in doing the Roman Reigns-CM Punk feud at this time. Therefore, the OTC should have faced Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42 as their rivalry is a standalone. It doesn’t necessarily need any external party’s involvement. WWE could have done Reigns’ feud with Punk whenever Heyman was ready for his involvement in this program, as he had much to contribute.
#1. To complete the historic WrestleMania trilogy
What makes WrestleMania truly the biggest spectacle in sports entertainment is its larger-than-life characters and epic long-term storylines. The biggest reason Roman Reigns should have faced Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 42 is to complete the historic WrestleMania trilogy in an epic fashion. Trilogies are rare in WWE and trilogies happening at WrestleMania are the rarest of rarest.
Therefore, the company had a golden opportunity to do Roman and Cody’s third WrestleMania match this year in Las Vegas. The gravitas of this match and the significance of this moment are a blockbuster attraction. A third match at WrestleMania 42 would have created a perfect trilogy, especially since reports indicate this was the original plan for the event.
