BYU Cougars Unveil 1996 Throwback Football Uniforms – SportsLogos.Net News

As part of its 100th season celebration, the BYU football program unveiled 1996 throwback uniforms on Monday morning that will be worn in the Big XII opener against Kansas State on Sept. 21.

The white jerseys feature royal blue numbers with a black drop shadow and two thick blue stripes outlined in black on the sleeves, which also include a drop-shadow version of a briefly used Block “Y.”

The two blue stripes are carried over to the center of the white helmets, which display the iconic Oval “Y” on both sides and a royal blue facemask, but only have thin black stripes on the inner portion.

The uniforms – which are on Nike’s Vapor F.U.S.E. template – are complete with plain white pants, replicating what BYU and quarterback Steve Sarkisian wore that memorable season.

The 1996 Cougars were arguably the best team in school history, finishing with a 14-1 record, including a 19-15 victory over the Wildcats in the Cotton Bowl – the first and only New Year’s Day bowl game in BYU history.

Interestingly, the only time the Cougars wore all-white uniforms that season was in their lone loss, a 29-17 defeat at Washington.

It was also the first time BYU wore all-white under legendary coach LaVell Edwards, according to our friend at Coulson Kunz of BYU Uniform Tracker.
