Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list after again aggravating an ankle injury, the team announced Monday.

Marte originally sprained his left ankle on Aug. 10 against the Philadelphia Phillies. He then aggravated the injury in his first-at bat in his next game, last Monday’s 5-4 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies.

He had a precautionary MRI Tuesday, and at the time manager Torey Lovullo called it a “low-grade ankle sprain” that the team would be taking “day to day.”

Marte, 30, did not play again until Saturday, when he was the designated hitter in a 6-1 road loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The two-time All-Star wasn’t in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game but came on to pinch-hit in the ninth. He went to the ground after checking his swing and had to be helped off the field.

“It didn’t look great,” Torey Lovullo told reporters after the game. “He creates a lot of force when he pushes off the ground. A very strong man. It just got him.”

Marte has hit .298 with 30 home runs and 81 RBIs in 116 games this season.

In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks recalled infielder Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno Monday.

Smith, 28, is batting .270 (17-for-63) with three homers and 16 RBIs in 29 games this season. In parts of five seasons with the Diamondbacks, he is batting .242 with 31 homers and 132 RBIs in 330 games.

Smith was last optioned to Triple-A when first baseman Josh Bell was activated on Aug. 2.

The Diamondbacks ultimately lost Sunday to the Rays, 8-7 in 12 innings. They start a three-game road series against the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
