Threads Continues to Rise in Latest App Download Rankings

While Meta hasn’t provided any official update on Threads’ active user count since the platform reached 200 million monthly active users in late July, the app does seem to be gaining momentum, based on total download numbers at least.

Appfigures download chart

As you can see in this chart, published by app analytics provider AppFigures, Threads rose to 6th overall, and second place on the iOS download charts in August, with 28 million cumulative downloads for the month.

Threads has been steadily climbing the download rankings, rising from 8th on the list back in January, to 7th in July. And now, it’s up at 6th in the total cumulative downloads display, which would seem to suggest that Meta’s Twitter replacement is gaining traction, and gradually taking more audience share in the micro-blogging space.

Because Threads’ main competitor, in X, isn’t even listed in these top rankings.

As of right now, X is currently 43rd on the total download listing for iOS in the U.S., and 56th on Android. It’s ranked similarly in other regions as well, but then again, the figures are based on total downloads, which means people actively reloading the app to their device. And given that X has already been downloaded by millions of people, that may not be the best comparative indicator, given Threads is new.

Yet, at the same time, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok continue to lead the way.

Still, at 500 million monthly actives, and 250 million daily users, X is still a long way ahead of Threads in actual users, and it remains a habitual connector for many, many people. It’s hard to see Threads unseating X anytime soon, but the trends do seem to be pointing to Threads powering up to become a real competitor to Elon Musk’s social project.

X has also lost millions of users in Europe, according to its own reporting, while it was recently banned in Brazil cutting off another 20 million or so users.

So while X is steadily shrinking, Threads is steadily rising, which could make Threads a bigger consideration over time.

Again, it may not be quite there yet, but the numbers do suggest that Threads is steadily gaining traction, and could be on track to exceed 300 million actives before the year is out.
