Why are the Seattle Seahawks wearing neon green uniforms tonight? (and why are the Packers wearing white helmets?)
Both are great questions!
The Seattle Seahawks are wearing their “Action Green” Color Rush uniforms for their Sunday Night Football game on December 15, 2024, against the Green Bay Packers. These uniforms were first introduced way back in 2016, and this is the eighth time the Seahawks have worn the full green-on-green set (they’ve worn the green jerseys a few more times with blue pants).

The uniforms were introduced as part of the NFL’s bold-for-them Color Rush series, which saw teams wearing bright head-to-toe uniform combinations, such as the Buffalo Bills in all red or the St. Louis Rams in all yellow. While most of those early eye-popping combinations were quickly retired, the Seahawks carried on, and continue to wear them here eight years later.
The Seahawks are 5-2 all-time when wearing the green-on-green combo:
December 15, 2016: Seahawks 24, Rams 3
November 9, 2017: Seahawks 22, Cardinals 16
December 10, 2018: Seahawks 21, Vikings 7
October 3, 2019: Seahawks 30, Rams 29
October 7, 2021: Seahawks 17, Rams 26
September 12, 2022: Seahawks 17, Broncos 16
November 23, 2023: Seahawks 13, 49ers 31
December 15, 2024: Seahawks vs Packers
Despite green being a main colour of the team since their expansion season 48 years ago, the Seahawks haven’t worn it as a jersey colour all too often. They didn’t wear a green uniform until the 2009 season, losing to the Bears at home on September 27. Following that, green stayed in the closet until it returned for that game against the Rams in 2016. In total, the Seahawks have worn a green top a dozen times heading into tonight with a swell 8-4 record in those games. Thanks to the GUD for those numbers.
As for the Green Bay Packers, they’re wearing an alternate white helmet during this contest, which gives us a fairly uncommon alternate-versus-alternate matchup in the NFL.
The Packers debuted their white alternate helmets earlier this season in a 24-22 win over the Houston Texans on Oct. 20, this is only the second time they’ve been worn following their unveiling back in August.
It’s not the first white helmet in team history, as the Packers briefly wore a white shell with a single green stripe down the center and a gray facemask from 1956-58. Those were paired with a green or white jersey and white pants that were completely devoid of gold, and acted as an alternate design in 1956-57 before being worn exclusively during the 1958 season.
These 2024 white helmets include Green Bay’s primary logo on the sides and a green and white striping pattern down the center, matching the Packers’ standard gold helmets.
