Two days after Russia announced that the last Ukrainian bastion in Kursk region had been overrun and the liberation was complete, it also acknowledged for the first time that North Korean troops fought alongside its troops in the defense of its territory.
North Korea also confirmed for the first time to have sent troops to fight for Russia under the orders of leader Kim Jong Un, making an important contribution to the liberation of Russian land previously occupied by Ukraine.
Reuters reported:
“The victorious end of the battle to liberate Russia’s Kursk region showed the ‘highest strategic level of the firm militant friendship’ between North Korea and Russia, KCNA state news agency cited the North’s ruling party as saying.”

“’Under the order of the head of state, the sub-units of the armed forces of the Republic regarded the territory of Russia as the one of their country and proved the firm alliance between the two countries’, KCNA cited the Commission as saying.
‘They who fought for justice are all heroes and representatives of the honor of the motherland’, KCNA quoted Kim as saying. North Korea ‘regards it as an honor to have an alliance with such a powerful state as the Russian Federation’, KCNA said.”

The mutual defense treaty was signed between Moscow and Pyongyang in June 2024 and requires both nations to provide immediate military assistance if either is attacked.

“The statement cited Kim as saying the deployment was meant to ‘annihilate and wipe out the Ukrainian neo-Nazi occupiers and liberate the Kursk area in cooperation with the Russian armed forces’.
[…] Kim said that a monument will soon be erected in Pyongyang to mark North Korea’s battle feats and that flowers will be laid before the tombstones of the fallen soldiers. Kim said the government must take steps to preferentially treat and take care of the families of the soldiers who took part in the war.”

“North Korea has been supplying a vast amount of conventional weapons to Russia as well. South Korea, the U.S. and their partners worry that Russia could reward North Korea by transferring high-tech weapons technologies that can sharply enhance its nuclear weapons program. North Korea is expected to receive economic and other assistance from Russia as well.”
Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said about the NK fighters: ‘We will never forget our friends’

Later on, President Vladimir Putin added that the Russian people ‘will never forget the heroism of the Korean Fighters.’
Sputnik reported:
“’We pay tribute to the courage and selflessness of the Korean warriors who stood side by side with the Russian Armed Forces to defend our homeland as if it were their own,” Russia’s president said.
[…] ‘Our Korean friends acted out of a sense of solidarity, justice, and true comradeship. We highly appreciate this and are sincerely grateful to the Chairman of State Affairs, Comrade Kim Jong-un, the entire leadership, and the people of North Korea’.”
