Tennessee Volunteers Unveils New Davy Crockett-Inspired “Smokey Grey” Alternate Football Uniforms – SportsLogos.Net News

The Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday morning unveiled the latest iteration of their “Smokey Grey” alternate football uniforms, which honor legendary frontiersman, soldier, politician and folk hero Davy Crockett and the “Volunteer Spirit.”

The anthracite jerseys feature orange stencil numbers and an orange and light gray striping pattern that is inspired by the fringed leather jacket that Crockett wore as he led a 12-man group known as the “Tennessee Mounted Volunteers” into the Battle of the Alamo, where he ultimately gave his life.

That pattern is carried over to the helmet, which features a mountain design in different shades of gray and an orange Power “T” on the sides. The helmet has been a staple of the “Smokey Grey” uniforms since they debuted in 2015, though the center stripe has changed over the years to complement the overall design.

For example, the 2015-17 and 2022 design had a thick orange stripe that culminated with a checkerboard pattern on the back to match the pants stripe, while their Condredge “The Artful Dodger” Holloway-inspired set in 2023 had a thin orange stripe and light gray facemask to create a vintage look.

The Volunteers then modified the helmets again in 2024, when their “Smokey Grey” uniforms pulled elements from the Tennessee state flag with the Tri-Star emblem on the sleeves and an asymmetrical orange and white striping pattern on the helmets and pants.

This year’s helmet design, meanwhile, has the “Volstar” logo on the front bumper, which also appears within a military-style patch on the light gray pants. This marks the first time the “Volstar” logo has appeared on the Volunteers’ uniforms since the 1996 season, when it was on their right sleeve

Tennessee is 6-1 all time in the “Smokey Grey” uniforms, including wins over Georgia in 2015, Florida and Nebraska (Music City Bowl) in 2016, LSU in 2022, Austin Peay in 2023 and Chattanooga in 2024. The lone loss came to the Bulldogs in 2017.

The Volunteers announced they will wear the latest version against New Mexico State on Nov. 15 for their Salute to Service game. It will presumably mark the end of a four-year initiative that Tennessee announced in 2022 that states the program would wear unique “Smokey Gray” uniforms for at least one game each fall through this season.
