The New York Rangers just served up the next piece of their centennial season pie this morning, with a special 100th anniversary uniform.
As they are the Rangers, they’re marking it pretty much the same way they’d mark any event – whether it be Stadium Series, Winter Classic, or 100th anniversary – a throwback-inspired set with the team name laid out diagonally. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, just saying it’s a thing.
This particular set, appropriately enough, closely resembles the Rangers’ inaugural season uniforms from 1926-27. A blue sweater with red and off-white striping, and “RANGERS” down the front in single-colour off-white. The collar is the same off-white with embellishments added to make it appear more like materials used in the 1920s. Player names and numbers match the colours and style of the team name down the front.

The Ragners’ 100th anniversary logo is placed on the left shoulder, and an advertisement for Mark Messier’s “Game 7” sports entertainment venture is on the other.
The blue hem loop inside the back of the jersey features a red apple with a “100” on it; the inside back collar is a neat tribute to the club’s original Madison Square Garden home, with a design based on the marquee outside that arena and the date of their first game, November 16, 1926. That first game was against the Montréal Maroons. The New York Times described the uniforms worn that day as “a dark blue, with red and white stripes,” rather than the lighter blue the club has embraced as their original hue.

Typography featured down the front of the uniform evolved in the 1940s, with the sans serif letters giving way to italicized serifs in 1941-42, and the now-familiar drop shadow being added the following year.
“Over the course of a century, the Rangers jersey has undergone several alterations, but the original spirit has endured,” read a statement on the team’s online shop. “In honour of the franchise’s Centennial season, the Rangers organization pays tribute to the original Blueshirt with its Centennial jersey, which will be worn on select occasions in 2025-26. The base colour and lettering are modelled off the sweater the Rangers wore in their inaugural season, demonstrating how the team’s uniform has become a timeless classic.”

The New York Rangers will wear this set for ten games in 2025-26, and then it’s gone for good, a one-year centennial season special.

The Rangers are the third team to release their centennial season uniform for the upcoming 2025-26 NHL season. Earlier this summer, the Chicago Blackhawks announced they would simply add a gold trim to their logo and numbers for year #100, and just a few days ago, the Detroit Red Wings revealed their special chain-stitched, multi-stripe tribute to their franchise history.
