Northwoods League unveils Richmond Flying Mummies – SportsLogos.Net News

The newest team in the collegiate summer level Northwoods League will be the Richmond Flying Mummies. The team—not to be confused with the Triple-A Richmond Flying Squirrels, who play in Richmond, Virginia—pays homage to two distinct aspects of the heritage of Richmond, Indiana.

The “Flying” portion of the nickname is a tribute to Richmond’s place in aviation history. Orville and Wilbur Wright, who invented and flew the first airplane, lived in Richmond as children from 1881 to 1884, before moving to Dayton, Ohio.

The “Mummies” portion of the nickname celebrates two Egyptian mummies housed at sites in Richmond. The Wayne County Historical Museum in downtown Richmond has been home to a 3,000-year-old mummy from Cairo since 1929. Additionally, visitors to the town can find Lady Ta’an, a mummy who was brought to Richmond in the late 1800s, at the Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History on the campus of Earlham College.

“We’re not just building a team, we’re resurrecting the thrill of summer nights under the lights,” said team President and Managing Partner Matt Bomberg in a statement. “The Flying Mummies represent resilience, surprise, and that unbeatable rush of a comeback win. Richmond is ready to unwrap something truly special.”

The identity features a bandaged mummy character in old-timey pilot’s gear. When the team takes the field in May 2026, home uniforms will feature a bandage-wrap pattern.

The Flying Mummies will be the southernmost of 26 teams in the Northwoods League, whose footprint extends across the upper midwest from Michigan to North Dakota.
