Sports analyst Stephen A. Smith questioned the Miami Dolphins‘ decision to fire general manager Chris Grier after the team lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 28-6, on Thursday night. The Ravens had star quarterback Lamar Jackson back on the field for the first time since he suffered a hamstring injury against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.
Jackson’s return was great news, but the Dolphins stole all the attention following their seventh loss of the campaign. While Jackson went 18 of 23 for 204 yards and four touchdowns, Miami’s QB Tua Tagovailoa went 25 of 40 for 261 yards against one interception and two sacks.
The Dolphins fired Grier Friday morning, which didn’t sit well with Smith. The veteran analyst explained that the Dolphins carried high expectations coming into the season, and the quarterback and the head coach haven’t lived up to them, putting the focus on them as the ones responsible for the Dolphins’ struggles.

“We didn’t walk into this season thinking they’re going to be trash,” Smith said. “We looked at their roster and thought they had some potential. It was about Tua, it was about Mike McDaniel. And the brother gets fired first? All I know is I better hear Mike McDaniel’s name today. It better not be just Chris Grier.”

The Dolphins dropped to 2-7 after Thursday’s loss, worsening their situation amid a season that saw Tyreek Hill suffer a season-ending injury and Tagovailoa struggle to find consistency.
Grier was a part of the organization since 2000 and became general manager in 2016. The Dolphins went to the playoffs three times under Grier, but they failed to win a postseason game.
Stephen A. Smith doesn’t think that was the right move and called for Mike McDaniel’s firing, too.
Stephen A. Smith wants Mike McDaniel gone
Stephen A. Smith’s rant didn’t stop there. He added that seeing Mike McDaniel keep his job while Chris Grier left the organization was wrong. He explicitly called for the Dolphins to fire their coach.
“Mike McDaniel with the glasses, giving one-word answers at the press conference, looking like a man from the Geek Squad from Best Buy,” Smith said. “That brother gets to keep his job for the rest of the season? Nah, that’s BS. That man needs to be gone, too.”
The 2025 season was considered crucial for the Dolphins’ future. A lot can change within the organization after this campaign, and Chris Grier’s firing might be the first domino piece to fall.
