Peaky Blinders creator speaks on Cillian Murphy’s final outing as Tommy Shelby

The highly anticipated feature film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is officially set to provide the definitive conclusion to the saga of Thomas Shelby. After six seasons of the critically acclaimed series, fans are gearing up for Academy Award-winner Cillian Murphy’s final performance as the iconic anti-hero.

Creator and writer Steven Knight recently gave his unique perspective on the film, discussing how it will serve as both a satisfying finale for the main character and a launchpad for the future of the Peaky Blinders universe. In an exclusive interview with the Empire magazine published on December 11, the House of Guinness writer stated:

“I hope it feels like the end of a novel. It’s the last few chapters of a long novel, where you get to round it off. And prepare people for what comes next.”

Streaming on Netflix, the British historical crime drama television series Peaky Blinders ran for six seasons, showcasing the Shelby family’s rise in the business and political world during the post-World War I era.

While creator Steven Knight remained coy about the circumstances, actor Cillian Murphy shared his excitement about Thomas Shelby’s return, noting how Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man will elegantly bookmark his story against the backdrop of World War II. He stated:

“I loved that beautiful ambiguity of him riding off on the horse, and he’s gone, and we don’t know where he’s gone to, but he’s back in the Gypsy world. Now here he is existing in whatever way that he can against the backdrop of World War II. That’s very elegant bookmarking of a story.”

The Steve star further added:

“We were on the side of a hill in the Peak District somewhere, in the pissing rain, and we were losing the light. But it was a really emotional scene. Then, everyone just drove off. “So it was absolutely, completely underwhelming.”

Set for a release on March 6, 2026 before its Netflix global debut on March 20, Steven Knight’s upcoming Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is the continuation of the Peaky Blinders series. The upcoming film’s synopsis reads:

“Birmingham, 1940. Amidst the chaos of WWII, Tommy Shelby is driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his most destructive reckoning yet. With the future of the family and the country at stake, Tommy must face his own demons, and choose whether to confront his legacy, or burn it to the ground. By order of the Peaky Blinders…”

The Peaky Blinders series which debut in 2013 and ran until 2022, was loosely based on a real urban youth gang which was active in the city from the 1880s to the 1920s. The real-life gang was mainly composed of young lawbreakers from the lower- and working-class neighborhoods.
