Liverpool manager Arne Slot has issued an update on Alexander Isak after the forward limped off in their clash with Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds secured a 2-1 away win over the north London side on Saturday, December 20.
Goals from Isak (56′) and Hugo Ekitike (66′) helped the reigning league champions record consecutive league wins for the first time since September. However, the victory came at a cost as the Reds saw three players leave the game with injuries.
Thanks for the submission!
British record signing Isak was forced off in the 60th minute after giving his side the lead. The former Newcastle man clattered into Spurs defender Micky Van de Veen while attempting to score, and suffered an apparent injury on his left leg. Isak had come on at halftime to replace Conor Bradley, who was taken off at the break after receiving treatment in the first period.
Meanwhile, right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who replaced Isak, was also substituted in the 90th minute after picking up a knock. While speaking to reporters after the match, Slot was asked about the injuries his side picked up in the clash.
The Dutchman revealed that Frimpong’s substitution was a precautionary move, and he is unsure about the seriousness of Isak and Bradley’s injuries. He said, as quoted by GOAL (via BBC):
“It is too short after the game to speak about it but it is never good when a player has to come off. I took Frimpong off because I did not want to be with 10 men, so that injury is fine.”
“The other two (Isak and Conor Bradley) we’ll have to wait and see. The good thing is that we have a week to go so hopefully we have enough players available to play next week again,” Slot added.
Liverpool will be hoping that Isak’s injury is not severe, as they’ve got a busy festive schedule with three league matches lined up in 12 days. The Reds are already short-handed in attack with Mohamed Salah away on AFCON duties.
Isak’s strike against Tottenham was only his third in 16 outings for Liverpool since his record-breaking £125 million transfer in the summer.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot on his side’s performance against Tottenham Hotspur
Liverpool boss Arne Slot was impressed with his team’s performance against Tottenham. He stated that they controlled the game and there were lots of positves to take from the match.
“Overall, we had good control over the game.Six games unbeaten, four wins and two draws. We are definitely not perfect yet but both of our number nines scored. Again, positives to take from the game,” Slot said (via BBC).
After suffering a terrible run of form between September and November, the Reds have now gone six games across competitions without a loss. The win against Spurs took them to fifth in the league standings with 29 points from 17 matches.
Up next, they will host struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday, December 27.
