Fans praised the performance of Patrick Dorgu, Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven in Manchester United’s hard-fought 1-0 Premier League home win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day (Friday).
Patrick Dorgu was the unlikely match-winner at Old Trafford, scoring the game’s decisive goal midway through the first period from a set-piece, as the Red Devils returned to winning ways following a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa last weekend.
Thanks for the submission!
In the only Boxing Day Premier League fixture of the night, the Red Devils were dominated on possession (33%) and pass percentage (80%-90%) by the Magpies but had more shots on target (3-2).
Fans praised the aforementioned trio of Dorgu, Martinez and Heaven for the all important three points.
“Brilliant performance tonight by Heaven, Martinez and Dorgu tonight,” one tweeted.
“Dorgu, Heaven, Martinez: Incredible,” another posted.
There were similar reactions from other fans:
“Dorgu, Martinez and Heaven were excellent tonight! 3 huge points,” wrote one.
“Lucky win but solid performance from dorgu martinez heaven,” posted another.
Martinez was immense on the night, making seven clearances, two recoveries, one blocked shot and an intervention. His defensive partner, Heaven, was also impressive, registering eight clearances, one blocked shot, one ground duel and one aerial duel won.
Meanwhile, Dorgu made one key pass, 16/23 accurate passes, including 7/8 in his own half, and one accurate cross. All stats are as per Sofascore at the time of writing.
The win lifted Manchester United to fifth in the standings, with 29 points from 18 games, winning eight.
“I did well today” – Patrick Dorgu after scoring Manchester United’s winner against Newcastle United

Manchester United left-back Patrick Dorgu was understandably happy with his winner against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Friday. It was the 25-year-old’s first goal for the Red Devils.
In 17 previous appearances, Dorgu had registered two assists – both in the Premier League. About his set-piece winner, the former Lecce man admitted that he had hit it sweetly, telling Sky Sports (via the BBC).
“It was a good hit. I didn’t know I could do that, but I was very happy to score my first goal in this stadium as well. It was amazing.
“I just took what he (Ruben Amorim) told me to work on my confidence and stuff. I think I did well today. I just looked at the ball, saw it drop, and I just hit it. I’ve been practicing in training, so I think that’s what helped me.”
Ruben Amorim’s side next take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at home in the league on Tuesday (December 30) as they look to stay in touch with the teams above them in the standings.
