Red Sox insider calls out Boston’s Alex Bregman method, warns failed pursuits of Juan Soto, Pete Alonso repeating

Alex Bregman is one of the hottest free agents on the market, and it’s no secret that the Boston Red Sox would be looking to add the player to their roster. However, while the Red Sox continue to fight for Bregman’s signature, the team’s approach towards signing him has been called out by an insider.

During an appearance on “WEEI Boston’s Sports Original’s” YouTube channel on Jan. 2., Red Sox insider Rob Bradford didn’t only criticize the approach of the Red Sox, but also reminded viewers of the team’s failed pursuits of Juan Soto and Pete Alonso.

“You (Red Sox) haven’t shown the ability,” Bradford said (5:34 onwards). “We’ve said that a million times that you go through that stretch from 2000, during the Theo Epstein years, and even some of the Ben Sherington years, and certainly Dave Dombrowski.

“If you wanted a player, you weren’t going to lose out on him. That was a fact. They (Red Sox) are doing things differently. They are going off of models. That’s why they don’t get Pete Alonso.”

Furthermore, Bradford mentioned that the Red Sox could have lured Pete Alonso to Boston if they had given the player the same offer as the Baltimore Orioles.

“I do not agree with the way they go about doing things in that respect, and they still have not won that battle,” Bradford said. “Max Fried, they didn’t. Juan Soto, they didn’t.”

Alex Bregman was one of the key players for the Boston Red Sox during the 2024 season. In the 2025 regular season, Bregman recorded 433 at-bats with an average of .273. He also hit 64 runs, 18 home runs and had 62 RBIs.

MLB insider believes Boston Red Sox are using a player to gain Alex Bregman’s attention

While reports indicate that the Boston Red Sox aim to reunite with Alex Bregman, there are also reports of the team eyeing Bo Bichette. It must be noted that Bichette is an All-Star infielder and was a part of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025.

While it makes sense why the Red Sox would want to sign a player of Bichette’s caliber, an MLB insider believes that the team’s interest in Bichette is a tactic to lure Alex Bergman. During an appearance on “NESN,” Red Sox analyst Lou Merloni said:

“I do think it’s one of the other to me,” Merloni said. “When I start hearing noise about the Red Sox turning their attention to Bo Bichette, all that is saying is, ‘Alex, accept the deal we have on the table.’

“Like, it’s media games, it’s trying to get Bregman, trying to get Boras to accept what the Red Sox have out there. If not, we’re gonna move on to Bo Bichette. I think it’s an option. There’s no question about it.”

Like Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette also had a phenomenal season last year. In the regular season, Bichette recorded 582 at-bats with an average of .311. Furthermore, he recorded 78 runs, 18 home runs and 94 RBIs.
