MLB Rumors:  Mets “heavily in” on NL East rival Mackenzie Gore whereas Angels’ deferred Anthony Rendon deal raises eyebrows

The New York Mets continue to be on the lookout for major roster additions this offseason after their disappointing end to the 2025 season, which saw them miss out on a postseason spot.

The Mets have had a relatively quiet offseason and have already missed out on re-signing All-Star-calibre players Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz in free agency. According to the latest reports, the Mets are interested in acquiring Washington Nationals starter Mackenzie Gore.

According to MLB insider Pat Ragazzao, the Mets have spoken to their divison rivals over a potential trade for Gore.

“The Mets recently spoke to the NL East rival Washington Nationals about left-handed starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore, as a source told Mets On SI,” Ragazzao wrote.

The 26-year-old starting pitcher posted a 5-15 record over 30 starts with a 4.17 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, a 2.9 K/BB ratio in 159.2 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels restructured their contract with Anthony Rendon earlier this month. The Angels will defer the $38 million salary Rendon was owed in the final season of his seven-year deal with the franchise.

According to the latest reports, the Angels will pay the veteran slugger $7.6 million annually as part of their restructured deal. The deferred payments will save $30.4 million on the Angels’ payroll, as Rendon is not expected to play for the Angels anymore.

Mets will have to pay “astronomically high” price for Mackenzie Gore

The Mets’ pursuit of Mackenzie Gore is not going to be easy, as cross-town rivals the New York Yankees are also reportedly in pursuit of the Nationals pitcher to bolster their rotation.

MLB insider Bryan Hoch reported earlier this week that the Yankees are pursuing Gore and Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta this offseason.

“With a blockbuster swap for Tigers ace Tarik Skubal unlikely, the Yankees have remained engaged with other available options, including talks with the Nationals about left-hander MacKenzie Gore and with the Brewers about right-hander Freddy Peralta,” Hoch wrote.

Pat Ragazzao, who linked the Mets to Gore, also reported that any potential deal for the Nationals pitcher will come at an “astronomically high” price, hinting at a dead end for the Mets.
