After a rough debut in 2024, Maye has broken out this season, completing 354 of 492 attempts (translating to a league-high 72%) for 31 touchdowns against just eight interceptions. He also led the league in passer rating at 113.5.

While speaking on Colin Cowherd’s FS1 show The Herd, former Patriots wideout Julian Edelman spoke about what differentiated Maye from other young quarterbacks:

“I think it’s his attitude. Just talking to people over there, everyone talks about how he’s so hungry to be coached, he’s so hungry to learn, and it translates into how he looks when he’s playing. He looks so confident, he makes it look so easy. And I think his relationship with Josh McDaniels has been awesome.”

Khalil Mack shared Chargers’ plan to stop Drake Maye in Wild Card meeting

One of the men assigned to stop Drake Maye is Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack. Speaking to reporters in the locker room during practice week, he began by praising the quarterback:

“He’s special. He has the arm talent, looks pretty fast as well. So, it’s going to be a challenge for us to keep him in the pocket.”

He then got right into it right away, discussing how to stop him:

“Rushing coverage is going to have to work well. Just understanding we gotta rush four as one up front. Keep him contained in the pocket. Not letting him get out whenever he doesn’t see anybody open. On the back end, we’re going to have to cover as well, because he’s accurate and able to get the ball in all different types of spots.”

When asked what the message to him and the defense about the coverage was, he said:

“Same as it’s always been. Understanding who we want to be, the defense we want to be, and putting it on film. Honestly, not talking about it too much. But just knowing what we want to be, and we understand what we want to be.”

Kickoff for the Chargers-Patriots game is at 8:20 pm ET on NBC.
