Combat in The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon mixes real-time and turn-based systems together. Similar to the previous Kiseki entries, your tactics will matter the most, especially during the Command Battles (Turn-based combat), as you will need to line up your attacks and combine them with your party members to deal the most damage to enemies.

This article will provide you with a basic overview of the combat system in The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon, and highlight what to do to quickly kill your enemies.

The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon combat system explained

The latest role-playing title from Nihon Falcom improves the battle mechanics from the previous Kiseki entries. While the formula is more or less the same as Trails Through Daybreak 2, there are a few improvements made that will make the gameplay feel smoother.

Here is everything you need to know about the combat system of The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon.

Field Battle and Command Battles

Similar to some of the previous entries, Trails Beyond the Horizon also has two combat modes: Field Battle and Command Battle. The former is the real-time battle mechanic, where you can use several abilties to take down a group of enemies.

During the Field Battle, you will be able to use various abilities like Charged Attack, ZOC, SCLM charge, and more. As the battle occurs in real time, you will be able to dodge incoming attacks and also move freely. This combat mechanic is useful for taking down small mobs of enemies.

However, for bosses and bigger enemies, the game will recommend using the Command Battle System. Here, you will be restricted to a turn-based arena, but similar to previous Kiseki games, you can move around and line up your abilities and spells.

The Command Battle can be activated by pressing your Shard Button (X/ Square on controller and R on Keyboard). You will need to line up your spells on enemies to deal damage to them. One thing to consider is that the enemies can move away from the area that you target with your spells and abilities.

Your spells and abilities will consume CP, which is a mana-like resource. Given that this action-adventure game will allow you to use both turn-based and real-time systems, it is wise to use the former for defeating bigger enemies and the latter for smaller groups of mobs.

Here are the Battle Mechanics that you will use during the combat of The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon:

  • Charged Attack: Can only be used during Field Battle. It’s a powerful alternate attack that deals damage and runs on a meter. You will need to hit enemies with your basic attacks to fill the meter.
  • Quick Arts: Can be used during Field Battle. A spell that you can cast on enemies that deals damage. Has a cool down.
  • ZOC: ZOC is a special ability that will slow down the environment and put you in a matrix for a limited time. Your damage will be increased when you are using ZOC. Can be triggered both during Field and Command Battles.
  • S-Crafts: S-Crafts are powerful ultimate abilities. These are only activated during Command Battles.
  • Shard Boost: Shard Boost allows you to buff your party members. This can only be used during Command Battles.
  • Shard Command: Passive buffs like increased defense, attack, HP, etc., that can be used during Command Battles.

The prologue chapter of The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon will give you an overview of all these systems.
