Ottawa Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark has been on a leave of absence since Dec. 28 due to personal reasons.
In a recent interview with TSN’s Claire Hanna, Ullmark opened up about the situation. He explained that the primary reason for his leave is mental health concerns.
He reached out for help, worked with the team’s support program, and took leave to address it properly. Unsubstantiated salacious rumors spread on social media revolving around Ullmark’s personal life, involving alleged infidelity to his wife, Moa, after he took a leave of absence.
He revealed his immediate reaction to the “homewrecker” rumor:
“People wonder why hockey players, professional athletes, are not talking; why we’re not showing any sort of emotions; why mental health in men and in women are a stigma. It took them less than 24 hours from my absence of leave to try to find reasons to why I’m gone—saying that I’m a home wrecker, a person that no one likes in the team. And I can’t defend myself,” Ullmark said.
He added:
“I didn’t know about this until days later. It sucks because I have a family. I have a wife. I have kids. I get sent text messages asking, “Hey, are you guys good?” Like, “Yeah, why?” And then they tell you about the rumors and you’re like, “What the fuck is wrong with people?”
Linus Ullmark stressed that the rumors were completely false and fabricated, as previously condemned by Senators GM Steve Staios. The primary reason for his leave remains mental health. The Senators’ goaltender is focusing on recovery with no firm return date yet.
Linus Ullmark’s return to the lineup could be imminent
Ullmark rejoined the team and returned to practice last week. He has been traveling with the Senators on their recent road trips.
According to reports, his return to the lineup could be imminent or possible as early as late January, with speculation that he might dress soon.
With the Senators five points off a wild-card spot, Linus Ullmark’s return will be a huge boost for the team, whose goaltending has faltered significantly during his absence.
Ullmark joined the Senators following a trade from the Boston Bruins last summer. He has posted a 14-8-5 record with a 2.95 GAA and an .881 save percentage this season.
