WWE subtly erases Mercedes Mone; it’s NOT about her walkout

AEW star Mercedes Mone made her debut in the Tony Khan-led promotion in early 2024. She is a former WWE star and one of the most recognisable names in the world of professional wrestling. She is the longest-reigning TBS Champion in history, having held the title for over 580 days.

The CEO was under WWE’s banner from 2012 to 2022. She achieved immense success there as she won the Women’s Championship five times and the Women’s World Championship once. Her on-screen name in the Stamford-based company was Sasha Banks, and she, along with Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and Bayley, were flagbearers of a new era of women’s wrestling. They are collectively known as the Four Horsewomen of WWE. Unfortunatly it seems like Mone’s former employers are trying to erase her name from their history.

Netflix recently released the second season of WWE Unreal. In its first episode, the reigning women’s Intercontinental Champion Becky Lynch said that she was not on the level of her peers back in 2015. After she uttered this sentence, they showed clips of Charlotte and Bayley. The former Sasha Banks was a bigger name than the three at the time, and she was not shown.

Although this omission was subtle, it spoke volumes. World Wrestling Entertainment might be trying to distance itself from the AEW star.

Mercedes Mone might never return to WWE

Many fans worldwide want the CEO to rejoin World Wrestling Entertainment. However, this seems unlikely. In a 2024 interview with Breakfast Club AM, the 33-year-old stated that she has been treated with immense respect in AEW, and she does not want to go back to the Stamford-based company.

“After the way that AEW has been treating me…I don’t know, I don’t think so. I feel like I have the best relationship with AEW right now and it’s legit…I’m living my dreams and it’s the best place I’ve ever been, mentally and physically and to be able to have new dreams, after being in the industry for 14 years, it’s the best feeling in the world, so AEW is my home right now,” she said.

Only time will tell what the future holds for the former TBS Champion. 2025 was a monumental year for her, and Tony Khan might make her world champion soon.
