Backstage replace on Powerhouse Hobbs’ AEW departure

Former AEW star Powerhouse Hobbs recently departed the company and signed a new deal with WWE. There is some additional information about Tony Khan’s offer to the star during the renewal discussions.

Hobbs was actively negotiating a new contract with AEW before his current deal expired. However, the star chose to pursue free agency instead of re-signing with the company. His last match was aired on the January 17 episode of Collision, where The Opps lost the Trios World Championship to Hangman Page, “Speedball” Mike Bailey, and Kevin Knight.

This week on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, veteran journalist Dave Meltzer shared some details on the offer AEW made for Hobbs to stay with the company. He mentioned that the company offered him a lucrative deal that was higher than what anyone except Chris Jericho got back in 2019. Meltzer added that the deal was comparable to what Bryan Danielson got when he joined the company and probably better than what Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and even Seth Rollins were making about four years ago. He noted this was indicative of how the talent war between the two companies was raising the payday for the stars. Dave, however, did not have much information about the star’s current WWE deal.

Powerhouse Hobbs will have a new name in WWE

Earlier this week, Wrestlevotes confirmed that Powerhouse Hobbs will go by a new name in WWE.

He joins a list of AEW stars like Ricky Saints, Blake Monroe, and Lexis King who had a name change before showing up in the TKO-owned company. The report confirmed that Hobbs will now go by the name Royce Keys. Royce is the star’s son’s name, and WWE might have drawn inspiration for his real-life relationships.

It will be interesting to see when Royce Keys shows up on WWE TV.
