Hubert Davis’ The North Carolina Tar Heels suffered a shocking 82-78 overtime loss to the No. 11 seed VCU in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.
The Tar Heels exit the tournament in the round of 64 for a second consecutive season, despite holding a sizable 19-point lead in the second half as VCU outscored them 23-8 in the final minutes of regulation time.
Following the upset, Tar Heels coach Hubert Davis was asked about the “missing ingredient” for North Carolina in March Madness. The veteran coach shared an honest answer:
“That’s a big thinking question and I apologize, I’m just not there right now,” Davis said. “Just really sad that we are not continuing to play and move forward because I have loved and enjoyed this team.
“I enjoy and love all of them, but I’ve really enjoyed coaching this team and I really wanted this group and these kids to experience more. But other than that, I’m just thinking about these guys and the rest of the guys in the locker room.”
The season-ending loss on Thursday has Davis’ job on the hot seat. Davis is signed through the 2029-30 campaign.
