Cam Skattebo modifications tone after backlash over controversial CTE feedback

Cam Skattebo has expressed regret over some controversial comments he made earlier this month.

During an episode of former Fresno State wide receiver Frank Dalena’s “Bring the Juice” podcast, the New York Giants running back was asked whether chronic traumatic encephalopathy was real (begina at 1:11 in the video below). He responded with a flat “no”, calling it “an excuse.”

He also agreed with Dalena’s notion that asthma was fake:

“Yeah. … You’re just soft. Just breathe air.”

Naturally, it attracted controversy and condemnation among the NFL fandom. On Saturday, Skattebo issued this statement on social media:

“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma. It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward.”

Cam Skattebo recently got candid on recovery from ankle injury

As a rookie, Cam Skattebo made an immediate impact for the Giants, not just for his bruising running style, but with his energetic demeanor as well. That was best exemplified in a Week 6 upset of the then-defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, whom he gashed to the tune of three rushing touchdowns.

However, his momentum dissipated two weeks later in a rematch against the Eagles. During the second quarter of what would become a 30-28 loss, he injured his ankle. It was revealed to have been dislocated, leaving teammates like fellow rookie Jaxson Dart “devastated”.

Since then, Skattebo has been focusing on rehab and recovery. Appearing recently on Rich Eisen’s eponymous show, he said:

“I can get away from like a baby hippo, maybe. That’s about it. But, yeah, a little bit over a jog. Just kind of striding out, not exploding yet and getting into that part of the game, but the jog and the striding.”

During that process, the Giants made a coaching change, hiring John Harbaugh. The ex-Baltimore Ravens leader has since proceeded to bring in some of his former players on board, including fullback Patrick Ricard, whom Skattebo salivated at playing with:

“It’s gonna be pretty exciting. … It’s awesome to have him. I know he’s gonna be another juiced energy ball to bring on to the team. I’m ready to play with him.”

The Giants begin their offseason workouts on April 6, alongside other teams with new head coaches.
