TNA Wrestling presents No Surrender later on tonight. It’s an action-packed card featuring three championship bouts, one being the TNA International Championship match. Trey Miguel is tasked with a huge responsibility tonight: taking TNA’s title back from WWE NXT’s Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo.
Trey Miguel made his return to TNA Wrestling back on January 22, earning one of the Feast or Fired briefcases in the process. Inside his case was his prize, a shot at the TNA Wrestling International Championship, currently held hostage by WWE. Stacks took the gold from two-time champion Steve Maclin back at Final Resolution in December, and already has the second-longest reign in the title’s short legacy.
Speaking to Q101 Chicago Alternative’s Kevin Kellam, Miguel stated he doesn’t resent Stacks holding TNA gold, seeing this match as an opportunity to do something truly special.
“I look at it like, if that weren’t the circumstances, I might not be in the position to do one of the biggest things I’m ever gonna do in my career if I bring this championship home. It takes that for this to happen. A goal that I never thought would be in my sights is now one of the most important things I’m focused on doing, because what that will mean is I faced someone from WWE for a championship and brought home property that should’ve never left TNA. Miguel believes this opportunity, should he win, could be bigger than anything he ever dreamed for himself in this industry. When asked about the possibility of taking WWE gold, something TNA Wrestling has yet to do, Trey seemed ecstatic at the idea.
“Oh, I absolutely hope so, brother!” [8:51-8:53]
TNA Wrestling’s Trey Miguel dropped out of high school to put his all into his career
To become a professional wrestler takes a level of dedication that’s, frankly, hard to even fathom. The training, the workouts, the diets, the long drives just for an opportunity before one can even sniff the big leagues? It’s a long and arduous journey that requires taking those steps at an early age. That’s exactly what the Fresh Prince of Mid-Air did.
Trey Miguel revealed that he actually dropped out of high school in order to focus full-time on pro wrestling.
“Brother, I didn’t even finish high school. I was just out of my freshman year when I started training for wrestling. I entered my sophomore year and, for the first semester of it, I could not focus. Wrestling just had me in a chokehold. [4:24-4:45]
Miguel said that some of his friends jumped to online school, which he ended up doing. But in the end, wrestling pulled him in and never let go, and rewarded him for all the sacrifices he put into it.
“I honestly couldn’t believe I was given the opportunity and had it in front of me to actually try and make this dream come true. All I ever wanted to do was even step foot in a wrestling ring.” [5:02-5:12]
The former X-Division Champion’s risky decision clearly paid off. Over a decade and a half in, and Trey Miguel is one of the most consistent highlights of, not just TNA Wrestling, but pro wrestling as a whole.
