Who won the NASCAR race today?
Chase Elliott, driving the #9 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports (HMS), secured his first win of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season after beating Denny Hamlin in Sunday’s Cook Out 400. It’s the first win of the season for Chevrolet and HMS.
Elliott utilized a magnificent strategy called by his #9 HMS team crew chief Alan Gustafson as NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver short-pitted on lap 261 to gain track position, and then he grabbed the lead for good after a restart with 68 laps to go and held off the charge of the day’s most dominant driver, Hamlin, to cross the finish line in P1.
The 30-year-old driver from Dawsonville, Georgia, led 84 laps and crossed the finish line by a margin of 0.565 seconds ahead of Hamlin, who led a race-high 292 laps to take the checkered flag. The win marked the 12th of his career and second at Martinsville.
Denny Hamlin finished runner-up, followed by Joey Logano, Ty Gibbs, and William Byron in the top five. Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, the defending series champion Kyle Larson, and Josh Berry completed the top 10.
