What is Appendicitis, the Condition Affecting Joel Embiid? Issue? 76ers Star’s Latest Medical Concern Explained

The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Thursday that Joel Embiid has been diagnosed with appendicitis. For this, the star big man will undergo surgery in Houston to address the health issue. The team has not provided further updates on Embiid and his condition, especially regarding whether he will miss significant time off.

The website of the Mayo Clinic states that appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix brought on by an obstruction of the lining. Patients who have it experience pain in the lower part of the abdomen. As the condition gets worse, the pain continues to increase and becomes a serious concern.

Aside from the pain in the lower abdomen, symptoms of appendicitis include: loss of appetite, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, belly bloating and gas. The pain also worsens with various jarring movements from the patient.

It’s been a difficult season for Embiid, who had high expectations for the 2025-26 NBA season. Many were anticipating the 76ers’ star would play more this season after an injury-plagued 2024–25 season in which he only played 19 games.

Compared to his 19-game season, Embiid has performed better this year. With 39 appearances, he has contributed to Philadelphia’s postseason comeback. The big man is averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Although he still struggles to stay healthy for a long period, Joel Embiid has shown improvement in his health and willingness to play. With his recent health setback, it’s a significant concern for the 76ers, since they need the All-Star’s contributions for the Play-In Tournament.
