SRH title former MI and GT pacer as David Payne’s harm substitute amid IPL 2026

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have roped in South African speedster Gerald Coetzee as the injured David Payne’s replacement for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign. The Australian left-arm pacer, who himself was an injury replacement for Jack Edwards ahead of the season, has been ruled out due to an ankle injury.

SRH had recently made an injury replacement to their bowling unit after Brydon Carse was ruled out of the tournament. On that occasion, the former champions named Sri Lankan left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka as the replacement.

Amid the injury crisis to the overseas bowling unit, which includes skipper Pat Cummins, SRH have brought in Gerald Coetzee, who initially went unsold with a base price of ₹2 crore during the IPL 2026 Auction.

“Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have signed Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for David Payne for the remainder of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Payne – who played 2 games for SRH in the ongoing IPL season and picked 2 wickets from the same – is ruled out of the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury. Coetzee – a right-arm pacer – has played 4 Tests, 14 ODIs and 18 T20Is for South Africa and has 67 international wickets against his name,” an official statement on iplt20.com read.

SRH will be in action soon as they take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at home on Saturday, April 18.

Gerald Coetzee has picked 15 wickets in 14 IPL matches at an average of 31.47 ahead of SRH stint

The Proteas pacer had made his IPL debut in the 2024 season for the Mumbai Indians (MI), featuring in 10 matches in his maiden campaign and picking up 13 wickets, at an average of 26.23. He was roped in by the Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2025, but could not make an impact, picking up only two wickets at an average of 65.50 and an economy rate of 10.92.

Coetzee recently featured for South Africa in the T20I series against New Zealand in March 2026, where he was the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Ben Sears.
