Elon Musk calls Sam Altman “Scam Altman,” accuses him of stealing a charity

Elon Musk again accused Sam Altman and Greg Brockman of stealing from charity ahead of the hearing in his trial against OpenAI. Musk filed the lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI in 2024, alleging that the company, which started as a nonprofit, later began prioritizing profits. Musk, who was a co-founder of the company, alleged he was betrayed by Altman.

On Monday, the jury selection was finalized for the trial. Following that, OpenAI took to X and wrote, “We can’t wait to make our case in court,” adding that truth and law are on its side. Sam Altman’s company alleged that Musk filed the lawsuit out of jealousy in a bid to “derail a competitor.” OpenAI further wrote that in the trial, the company would get a chance to put Elon Musk under oath and question him “about this attempt to undermine our work.”

An X user, @XFreeze, reacted to OpenAI’s post and wrote that Musk invested his money in founding the company in 2015 and found the best talent to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. The user also alleged that OpenAI’s team pushed Musk out and took control to turn the company into a “for-profit.”

Scam Altman and Greg Stockman stole a charity. Full stop. Greg got tens of billions of stock for himself and Scam got dozens of OpenAI side deals with a piece of the action for himself, Y Combinator style. After this lawsuit, Scam will also be awarded tens of billions in stock directly. The fundamental question is simply this: Do you want to set legal precedent in the United States that it is ok to loot a charity? If so, you undermine all charitable giving in the United States forever.I could have started OpenAI as a for-profit corporation. Instead, I started it, funded it, recruited critical talent and taught them everything I know about how to make a startup successful FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD.Then they stole the charity.

Elon Musk quote-tweeted the post and called Sam Altman “Scam Altman” and Greg Brockman “Greg Stockman.”

“Scam Altman and Greg Stockman stole a charity. Full stop. Greg got tens of billions of stock for himself, and Scam got dozens of OpenAI side deals with a piece of the action for himself, Y Combinator style. After this lawsuit, Scam will also be awarded tens of billions in stock directly,” Musk said.

The tech billionaire further questioned:

“The fundamental question is simply this: Do you want to set legal precedent in the United States that it is ok to loot a charity? If so, you undermine all charitable giving in the United States forever.”

The Tesla CEO argued that he could have started OpenAI as a for-profit corporation, but instead, he started it for the public good. Musk claimed that he “funded” and taught how to make a “startup successful FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD.” On Monday, Elon Musk referred to Sam Altman as “Scam Altman” in a series of X posts.

Elon Musk shares his old interview with Sam Altman

On Monday, Elon Musk posted an interview from the past in which Altman and Musk discussed OpenAI in the company’s founding days. In the clip, Sam Altman, who was in his 20s at the time, asked Musk, “How do you think OpenAI is going as a six-month-old company?” In his response, Musk said:

“It seems to be going pretty well. I think we’ve got a really talented group at OpenAI. It seems like it. Yeah, a really talented team and they’re working hard. OpenAI is structured as a 501c3 non-profit, but many non-profits do not have a sense of urgency. It’s fine. They don’t have to have a sense of urgency, but OpenAI does. I think people really believe in the mission.”

While sharing the clip, Elon Musk wrote:

“They stole a nonprofit. It’s not right.”

On the other hand, OpenAI and Sam Altman have denied Musk’s allegations.

After jury selection was completed on Monday, the opening statements from both sides will take place on Tuesday in a federal court in California.
