Michael 2 confirmed to be in manufacturing: Timeline and extra, defined

In light of the commercial success of the 2026 biopic Michael, studio heads have affirmed that a sequel is indeed in the works, and Michael 2 is one of the projects underway. Michael 2 is the sequel to the first biopic that followed the trajectory of Michael Jackson, starting from his early days with the Jackson 5, leading up to his peak of fame in the late 1980s.

Although the original movie ended on a crucial moment during his career, Michael 2 is anticipated to cover his later years.

The buzz around the movie is not only because of the topic but also the production choices of the first film. The original film experienced changes during its making, including the departure of its storyline and reshoots, which led to changing how some aspects of Jackson’s life were shown.

It is officially in early development, with Lionsgate confirming a sequel is highly likely to begin production in late 2026 or 2027, potentially targeting a release around 2029 while continuing Michael Jackson’s story beyond the first film.

What is the latest update on Michael 2?

Michael 2 is currently at an early stage of development, with Lionsgate confirming that the movie sequel is officially greenlit. Adam Fogelson, the chair of Lionsgate films, said that the chance of the film happening is “very high,” which means that the studio is very confident about telling the story further (The Town podcast).

The filming could start as early as late 2026 or 2027; the biggest factor is the availability of director Antoine Fuqua, who is the one that the project is most closely associated with, but he is busy with other things as well.

Fogelson added that talks about the creative direction and extent of the sequel are continuing and that the group will soon come together to flesh out their “full vision” of the movie (The Town podcast).

According to the industry, if shooting starts in 2027, it might be out by 2029. Though such timelines can change depending on the production work and whether the first film’s unused footage is going to be integrated. The sequel remains to be a film that focuses on the aspects of Michael Jackson’s life, which were not in the first film, especially the ones that came after the original film’s time period (The Town podcast).

Michael 2 is a sequel to Michael (2026), the film that was directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan. In the first movie, Jaafar Jackson played the role of his uncle Michael Jackson, while Juliano Krue Valdi was cast as the younger version of the singer. The main cast also included Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.

The project of the original film started in 2019, and Lionsgate officially announced the project in 2022. The shooting was done in 2024, and the reshoots happened in 2025 after the legal constraints forced the filmmakers to remove the references to the allegations from the 1990s. These modifications resulted in a new ending that highlighted Michael Jackson at the peak of his fame instead of his later years.

The film was first shown in Berlin on April 10, 2026. After that, it was released in the UK on April 22 and in the US on April 24. It managed to earn 278 million globally, and it was one of the top-grossing films of the year. Even though Jaafar Jackson’s acting was appreciated by many, the plot was also considered by some reviewers as “sanitized”.

The creative team behind the sequel to Michael is probably going to dig deeper into parts of Jackson’s life that haven’t been explored in the first film. Fogelson told The Town podcast that “a huge portion of his life separate and apart from allegations” could be the focus of the sequel.

He went further to mention significant highlights like the 1993 Super Bowl halftime show to give instances of things that didn’t get covered in the first movie, though he made it clear that they are not planning to include those scenes in Michael 2 for sure.

Also, Jaafar Jackson has said that he is keen on playing his character again, which is a hint towards the possibility of the same cast in Michael 2.
