Connor Zilisch speaks out after breakthrough Cup efficiency in NASCAR All-Star Race at Dover: “Needed a day like this”

A grueling NASCAR Cup Series rookie campaign has finally turned out to be fruitful for Connor Zilisch after marking the best performance in his first career start at the All-Star Race at Dover Motor Speedway. While this exhibition race doesn’t award points, Zilisch’s hard-fought fifth-place finish provided exactly what the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing team needed.

Zilisch’s strong track position was wiped away when the No. 88 crew was assessed a pit-road penalty for interference. The penalty dropped Zilisch to the tail end of the field, forcing him to spend the final 125 laps overcoming the traffic to be among the frontrunners till the checkered flag.

In a conversation via Frontstretch, Zilisch said:

“It was a really good day for Trackhouse and this 88 team. We needed a day like this where we had contending speed. It’s been a long year, and, you know, moments of hope like this certainly feel good.”

Moreover, Zilisch admitted it would have taken an immense effort to truly challenge eventual race winner Denny Hamlin and runner-up Chase Briscoe for the win.

When analyzing the car’s speed, Zilisch admitted that while they still battled minor handling balance issues, the car simply possessed the raw “grip” and “potential” they had been searching for.

“I feel like we had that today. We had potential and, honestly, room to grow. So really proud of everybody.”

In the aforementioned interview, Connor Zilisch highlighted the last three weeks as a definitive turning point for his program, citing a strong run at Texas Motor Speedway, a dominant road-course showing alongside winning teammate Shane van Gisbergen at Watkins Glen, and now a top-five All-Star run.

“I feel like we’re going in the right direction, Zilisch said in his post-race interview.

If the No. 88 team can carry this newly unlocked short-track grip into the upcoming regular-season stretch, Connor Zilisch might just turn those moments of hope into a permanent playoff conversation in his rookie campaign.

Meanwhile, the NASCAR Cup Series will next return for the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 24.
