“Absolute travesty” – Piers Morgan furiously reacts as Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes wins award forward of Arsenal star

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has slammed the decision to name Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as the Premier League player of the season ahead of Declan Rice.

Fernandes, who has equalled the record for the most assists in a Premier League season (20) this term, has been the major driving force behind Manchester United securing their return to the Champions League.

However, Rice guided Arsenal to the Premier League title, ending the club’s 22-year-long wait for the trophy. The Englishman also played a starring role in the Gunners’ run to the Champions League final set to be held on May 30.

Morgan believes Rice deserved the award ahead of Fernandes and called the decision to honor the United captain as ‘ridiculous’. He is of the opinion that a Premier League-winning midfielder deserves to be player of the season ahead of someone whose team did not even compete for the title.

Expressing his disappointment on X, Morgan wrote:

“Ridiculous… Declan Rice should have won this. Absolute travesty that someone whose team never once competed for the Title wins over a guy whose brilliance all season led us to the Title.”

Fernandes will be hoping to sign off with a goal or assist on Sunday, when Manchester United face Brighton away from home. Rice, meanwhile, will be crowned champion of England away at Selhurst Park.

Bruno Fernandes admitted he was ‘sad’ when Declan Rice joined Arsenal instead of Manchester United

Despite being rivals on the pitch, Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he’s a big admirer of Declan Rice. Speaking on JoelBeya TV YouTube channel, the Portuguese stated that Rice had all the qualities that was needed at Manchester United.

Fernandes went on to reveal that he was sad when Rice joined Arsenal instead of a move to Old Trafford. He stated:

“To be honest, I admire him a lot, first of all as a person, because I know him from the Algarve when we were training together and everything.

“Obviously, I knew him already from West Ham and we all knew the qualities he had and I have always said that I thought Rice was a player to play for Man United.

“I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal, I don’t know if there was the opportunity or the chance to come to Manchester United, but I always thought that he would be the perfect fit for our club.”

Fernandes, who was linked with a move to Saudi Pro League last year, has only a year left in his contract at United.
