Matthew Stafford hilariously trolls Rams rookie Ty Simpson with cheeky Alabama joke after NFL Draft

Matthew Stafford is already making Ty Simpson feel at home in Los Angeles after the Rams drafted the quarterback in the first round last month. The veteran hasn’t failed to let the rookie know that the NFL locker room never misses an opportunity for college football trash talk.

In his guest appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, Stafford explained what the communication has been like between him and Simpson since he arrived on the team. He went on to disclose the message he sent to the rookie after he was drafted, mocking the Alabama football program.

“I’m in there with him in the meeting room, on the practice field, trying to share as much knowledge as I can,” Stafford said. “Listen, I was a big fan of Ty when he was playing at Alabama.

“I sent him a text after he got drafted and said, ‘Really enjoyed watching you play, just you were in the wrong jersey. You weren’t a dog.’ But no, I did enjoy watching him play. He’s a talented kid. I’m going to do everything I can to get this team ready to play, to win.”

Matthew Stafford had his college career at Georgia from 2006 to 2008 before getting drafted as the first-overall pick by the Detroit Lions in 2009. Ty Simpson, on the other hand, had his college career at Alabama, a fierce rival of the Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference.

Matthew Stafford ready to help out Ty Simpson

Speaking further on the “Pat McAfee Show,” Matthew Stafford disclosed how ready he is to help Ty Simpson get things right in the NFL. Having a veteran’s guidance has helped many rookies thrive in the NFL, and that’s what Simpson will be getting from the reigning NFL MVP.

“(I want to) share some of the knowledge that I’ve gained throughout my career because I wouldn’t be in the seat that I am right now, talking to you guys after a really good football season, if I didn’t have people that were helping me out along the way too,” Stafford said.

“So I’m happy to do that. But he’s been a sponge, man. He’s looking to get better. And really, that’s everybody on our team, all the young guys that we’ve picked.”

Ty Simpson is now viewed as the Rams’ quarterback of the future, taking over when Matthew Stafford retires. This will give Simpson enough time to settle seamlessly into the team. Stafford had his contract extended to 2027 in a one-year deal worth $55 million earlier this month.
