Conor McGregor: “Should’ve just put on a damn singlet”

While Max Holloway is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers in MMA, he has never been known for his grappling. In fact, ‘Blessed’ was largely controlled on the ground during his BMF fight against Charles Oliveira in March.

Now, as the Hawaiian prepares for a rematch against Conor McGregor at UFC 329, he has revealed that, unlike many MMA stars, he never wrestled in high school. Hilariously, however, Holloway avoided wrestling during his teenage years for a reason few would expect; something he now admits he regrets.

Speaking to Megan Olivi during a recent segment of Becoming a Fighter, Holloway said the embarrassment of wearing a singlet was what swayed him away from the sport:

“Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. Wrestling was available at my high school. And a bunch of my friends were trying to get me into wrestling, but I wasn’t about to be caught dead in a singlet, dawg, are you crazy? At first, I thought it was crazy, but now look at me. I’m 30-something old. I use tights to fight. Like, what the hell, I should have just put on a damn singlet to learn wrestling.”

‘Blessed’ also acknowledged that this revelation would likely give fans even more reason to slam him for his loss to Oliveira:

“A lot of people that’s watching this right now are gonna go in your comments and be like, ‘Yeah, he should have done wrestling, because look what Oliveira did to him.’ These guys are ridiculous, bro.”

Conor McGregor trolled Max Holloway over his loss to Charles Oliveira

Max Holloway was right. Not many seem to have forgotten his loss against Charles Oliveira, especially not his upcoming opponent, Conor McGregor.

During a sit-down with Joe Rogan ahead of his upcoming welterweight clash, McGregor took aim at Holloway’s loss against Oliveira, accusing both fighters of draining themselves to make the lightweight limit:

“You know, I’ve seen Max and Charles starve themselves. The last time out at 155 pounds for the BMF. I didn’t think there was anything BMF about it. Who’s the baddest man in the sauna? How are you doing after your five-round fight with Oliveira? How’s the body? How are you feeling? How’s Hawaii?”

UFC 329 will go down on July 11 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas during International Fight Week. This will be the first time McGregor returns to the octagon following his infamous leg break against Dustin Poirier in 2021.
