England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match ban following his red card in their FIFA World Cup round of 16 clash against Mexico.
Quansah was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute of the game at the Azteca Stadium after his careless tackle on Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo. The Three Lions, however, got the job done against El Tri despite playing the final 36 minutes with a numerical disadvantage.
Thanks for the submission!
The decision means Quansah will be suspended for England’s quarter-final clash with Norway and will also sit out a potential clash against Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-final.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on England’s national-team player Jarell Quansah, who was sent off as a result of a direct red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026™ match between Mexico and England played on 5 July 2026 at Mexico City Stadium: 2-match suspension for a breach of article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code,” a statement from FIFA read.
“The suspension will be served in the upcoming match(es) of the representative team of England in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and in accordance with art. 69 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code,” it added.
The ban leaves boss Thomas Tuchel with limited options at right-back. Reece James has not played since picking up a hamstring injury in England’s second group game against Ghana.
Djed Spence was only considered fit enough to come on as a substitute in their hard-fought 3-2 win over Mexico.
The Football Association, meanwhile, had been considering whether to appeal Quansah’s red card after USMNT forward Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban was suspended for a year.
