There has been a lot of chatter about LeBron James‘ potential return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2026-27 season. James remains a free agent this summer after he decided to end his partnership with the LA Lakers. Numerous teams have reportedly made an effort to sign him, and the Cavaliers are reportedly among them.
Many believe that a storybook ending for James’ career in Cleveland could happen. He started his NBA journey with the Cavaliers in 2003 and led them to a championship in 2016, after a brief, four-year stay with the Miami Heat. If he decides to return to his hometown team, it will be his third — and potentially, last — stint with the organization.

On Sunday, head coach Kenny Atkinson teased a potential James-Cavaliers reunion ahead of the season. Atkinson was interviewed by the broadcast team during Cleveland’s Summer League game against the Detroit Pistons.

“You guys know there’s a little free agency thing going on right now. That could be our real jump and you know what I’m talking about. That’s exciting too,” Atkinson said.
There have been many who have claimed that James will return to the Cavaliers for his 24th NBA season. Longtime commentator Bill Simmons said last week on his podcast that it’s already a “done deal.”
Aside from a return to Cleveland, many believe that James could return to South Beach and play a second stint for the Miami Heat. Much like the Cavaliers, playing for the Heat is a familiar organization where he experienced playing winning basketball.
Other teams that are reportedly in the mix for the LeBron James sweepstakes are the Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers.
Colin Cowherd Gives Honest Assessment on LeBron James Joining the Cavaliers
A return to the Cavaliers would be a great way to end LeBron James’ Hall of Fame career. However, not everyone is a fan of him returning home. NBA commentator Colin Cowherd believes that it will be a terrible thing for Cleveland’s roster, since James has shown signs of slowing down, especially on the defensive end.
“LeBron (James) will make you the worst defensive team,” Cowherd said. “Slowest player in the NBA last year was James Harden. He’s a Cav. You know the second slowest player? LeBron James, if he goes to Cleveland. They’ll be the worst team in terms defensively, and they weren’t very good last year, even with rim protection.”
While Cowherd believes having James will make the Cavaliers a better team in close games, he said that they don’t need him at this point. According to him, the four-time champion is not what Cleveland needs next season and moving forward.
