Magic: The Gathering 2027 lineup revealed (thus far)

Magic: The Gathering has a very interesting lineup of announced product for 2027, and while the Universes Beyond sets are still a mystery, we have a good idea of what to expect and when. Sadly, we’re still not returning to Alara, no matter how much I beg and plead, but we are returning to some very familiar locations in the core canon sets for MTG in 2027.

Another thing that stood out to me is that there are three canon sets and three Universes Beyond sets, instead of there being one that overpowers the other. Universes Beyond sets aren’t going away, no matter how some fans feel about them. However, I’m grateful that at least it’s three and three, and not three and four. Here’s the current schedule, as we know it, for Magic: The Gathering in 2027.

All confirmed releases for Magic: The Gathering 2027 schedule

In addition to learning about some incredible Reality Fracture cards, we also learned the 2027 schedule of product for Magic: The Gathering. Of course, these dates could change, but that’s not something that really happens in MTG, so I wouldn’t worry about that too much. Sadly, none of the Universes Beyond sets were revealed, but we do know that there are three of them. Below is the complete schedule for 2027 MTG sets:

Nauctis: The Sunken Realm appears to be a new location, and is going to be a primarily underwater themed set. Expect the Professor at Tolarian Community College to love this set, because I can only imagine it’s going to have some wildly overpowered Merfolk.

It also brings back Homarids, which I appreciate as a Fallen Empires enjoyer. It’s also confirmed that Nauctis is the start of a brand-new, multi-year story arc for Magic: The Gathering, when it kicks off on February 5, 2027.

Kamigawa: Titanbreach brings us back to Kamigawa on June 4, 2027, still very much its Neon Dynasty era. An Omenpath will open up over the skies of Towashi, and the citizens will have to deal with the giant monsters of Ikoria, as they begin to rampage. It’s an interesting war between two very different planes, but it’s fitting because “giant monsters”. Will we see another Godzilla collab?

The final revealed and named set for Magic: The Gathering in 2027 is Zhalfir! It’s a plane that was phased out of existance for a very long time, where it was once connected to the plane of Dominaria. Home to Teferi, it is now its own plane, in the aftermath of the New Phyrexia invasion (the previous storyline). We can confirm that Teferi Akosa will return to his home plane, and perhaps that means we’ll get a new version of the popular Hero of Dominaria when this set launches on October 1, 2027.

This is such an exciting reveal, and while it’s not one of the planes I was personally hoping for, I loved the lore of the earliest days of Dominaria. Getting to go this setting in a more official way, with this Magic: The Gathering set is a very exciting prospect.

In addition, we’ll be receiving three full Universes Beyond sets, and we personally have no idea what these could be. I’d be okay with another Final Fantasy set, personally, or you know, what about something wild like Dragon Ball? I’m keeping an open mind on whatever sets get revealed. For now, we do know that it’ll be a pretty stacked year, and some interesting set designs are coming our way.
