Both Dominguez and Jones, both on $780,000 one-year contracts, have experienced inconsistent seasons in MLB. The right-fielder has shown signs of the player the Yankees once viewed, but has since faltered. In 2026, he recorded five home runs and 11 RBIs while averaging .229 in 144 at-bats.
Jones, meanwhile, recorded two home runs and seven RBIs across 73 at-bats, hitting .233 with a .687 OPS and a .317 on-base percentage. He still remains an intriguing prospect with a promising left-handed swing, but the Yankees are weighing on his developmental stage vs. their current push for their October run.
Brian Cashman talks about Yankees’ needs for potential upgrades
New York Yankees executive Brian Cashman acknowledged that a catcher might be the target for the club at the trade deadline, noting that it’s been “an issue”. Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers is one of the key targets ahead of August 3.
“I think we’re open-minded at the Deadline to try to improve ourselves, period, end of story. We’ll evaluate what’s available and try to push in on anything that makes sense, whether it’s pitching or offense,” Brian Cashman said.
Apart from Jeffers, Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman is also another possibility. Cashman expressed that although Austin Wells is trying hard for the team, “at the same time, it’s been a struggle” offensively.
