San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch offered a telling update on the franchise’s fractured relationship with Brandon Aiyuk the 2026 training camp opens. The disgruntled wide receiver has refused to report and remains on the reserve/left squad.
Lynch comment on Aiyuk’s status with the organization was brief, indicating the 49ers have turned a page on the ongoing drama with the receiver.

“Brandon is on a left squad designation,” Lynch said while addressing the press on Saturday.

“As such, he’s not on our 90-man roster. And, you know, I’m personally, and we as an organization are going to focus on the players that are here. And so, I don’t have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well, we wish his family well.”

Lynch’s refusal to elaborate further on the topic shows the 49ers’ dedication of their entire attention to their active roster. The club’s rift with Brandon Aiyuk can be traced to the wide receiver’s ACL and MCL injury in Oct. 2024.
The injury was followed by an extended absence from the team and the eventual voiding of Aiyuk’s $27 million in 2026 guaranteed money. The 28-year-old demanded a trade to the Washington Commanders, publicly vowing to never do business with the 49ers again.
However, with John Lynch’s latest dismissive farewell, the feeling between both parties is clearly mutual.
What does the future hold for Brandon Aiyuk?
Things are not looking good for Brandon Aiyuk at the moment, as he’s currently in what can be best described as a football limbo. His reserve/left squad status also means he isn’t being paid.
What’s more, the 49ers could look to recoup up to $18.4 million from him for failing to fulfill his contract terms during his rehab. Meanwhile, his exit from San Francisco is mired, with his perception by league executives making a trade highly unlikely.
His current contract baggage amid the ongoing off-field controversies and ongoing injury recovery is a major deterrent. However, there is an expectation that he can be released outrightly.
But Aiyuk faces an administrative hurdle before he can test the open market. He is deemed retired by the league due to his squad status with San Francisco and must apply to the NFL Commissioner for reinstatement.
The wide receiver appears to still have his sight set on Washington, recently purchasing a $10 million estate in Loudoun County, Virginia.
