Former UFC champion Chris Weidman is unsure about how Ian Machado Garry could perform in the welterweight title clash at UFC 330.
Garry is up against Islam Makhachev, who has dominated most of his lightweight opponents. The Russian defeated Jack Della Maddalena to win the welterweight gold, and will make his first title defense in this division at UFC 330.
While Garry has discussed several plans to beat Makhachev, Weidman believes the Russian’s elite grappling will be too much for the Irishman.
Speaking on the Deep Waters podcast, Weidman added that Makhachev would also throw punches and kicks too:

“I think this is going to be a really stressful fight for Ian Garry, though. I don’t think he’s going to be as comfortable. He’s going to be sh****** his pants about the takedown because he sees how good Islam is on the ground, and Islam is going to throw hard on the feet too.”
Dustin Poirier also chimed in with his thoughts. ‘The Diamond’ lost to Makhachev at UFC 320, and pointed out how difficult an opponent the Russian is:
“We are talking about how good of a striker Garry is but when I was there with Islam, I didn’t want to plant and throw heavy shots too much because I didn’t want him to grab my legs. So it made me fight a little different, and that could be with Ian too.”

Islam Makhachev shares his game plan for Ian Machado Garry
Islam Makhachev isn’t worried about the threat that Ian Machado Garry possesses ahead of their UFC 330 fight.
The Russian was speaking to MMA Fighting, and suggested that all Garry does is run away, and he too has been running in his training camp:
“His skills. I just have to run in this camp. I have to follow him because he run too much, you know. I know his game plan, we always see his fight and he has same style always. But, I will try to catch him, take him down, just what I did is all my opponents.”
He also added that things are going well in the gym as he prepares for the title defense:
“Everything is going well. We stay in the same gym as last couple of fights. We stay in New Jersey and training in Nick Catone gym. It’s very nice gym.”
