Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is questioning the Reds’ decision to make a £145 million move for Paris Saint-Germain‘s Bradley Barcola. He believes that the Anfield club needs to sign a right-winger rather than another player for the left side.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Carragher highlighted that Liverpool already have three options for the left wing in Rio Nguomoha, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo. He wants the club to focus on getting a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who left the club in the summer and said:
Thanks for the submission!
“No he plays on the opposite flank! LFC currently have three players who could play from the left in Rio/Gakpo/Wirtz & no one who plays from the right. Well Rio has always played from the left so that’s obviously his best position, Gakpo should move really but who knows, I’m interested to see where Wirtz plays, if he’s 10 Dom plays CM. I’m not sure about that. Need a right winger desperately!”
Liverpool also signed Victor Munoz, who likes playing off the left flank, but can operate on the right. The Spaniard joined for a reported €40 million from Osasuna after the Reds hijacked Newcastle United’s move.
The wing position has been Liverpool’s main focus this summer and Andoni Iraola admitted it in a recent press conference. He said:
“I think it’s difficult to say a number when the market is open, and you have to be always open to new options to improve the squad. There are obvious situations that we know where we need to sign players. A winger, for example – we definitely need to sign a winger.”
“But there are other situations that we will have to analyse what the market gives you, what’s the cost, how we also see the players we have. We have some tricky positions where we have injured players that we trust but is still not the ideal situation. So, it will depend on a lot of things.”
Mohamed Salah had another year left on his contract but cut short his stay after a fallout with former manager Arne Slot, who parted ways after the end of the season.
Liverpool in talks to sign Bradley Barcola from PSG
PSG are reportedly open to selling Bradley Barcola this summer, as the Frenchman wants to play more. He believes his chances are limited at the Ligue1 side and is interested in a Premier League move.
Liverpool are leading the chase and have been quoted £145 million by the UEFA Champions League winners. Arsenal are also keeping tabs, but they remain focused on Vinicius Jr.
