Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs is expecting a new contract from the franchise. The star running back didn’t participate in the team’s practice on Sunday amid talks of contract negotiations.
Gibbs attended the Lions’ training camp for the first time on Sunday but remained a spectator. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared an update on Gibbs’ appearance at the team practice.

Rapoport reported that the Lions running back is dealing with a “minor injury,” explaining his non-participation.

“We’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that Jahmyr Gibbs is here on the field behind me, the bad news is he’s not doing anything except standing there in a hoodie and watching practice,” Rapoport said. “… He is dealing with, I would say a minor injury as he waits for his contract to be done.”

“It’s not as simple as well why haven’t the Lions paid him. First of all, the Lions have paid several of their stars. That really is what they have been doing this offseason, is what they do every offseason, which is draft really well [and] pay the really good guys. Jahmyr Gibbs no doubt is next, but it doesn’t exist in a vacuum.”
Gibbs is in the fourth year of his $17,845,130 contract with the Lions and reportedly seeking a contract worth around $20 million a year. Rapoport believes his new contract will make him “one of the highest-paid running backs” in the league.

While Jahmyr Gibbs didn’t participate in the Lions’ practice on Sunday, he was seen talking to star wideouts Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown in the end zone.
Williams, who signed a three-year, $83 million contract last September, hailed Gibbs as one of the best players in the league.
“And you know, hopefully coming up we get to see my boy, get something done so he could be back out here with us in his jersey and stuff,” Williams said. “So, you know, I’m really excited for him.
“I know what he could do for us, and I know what he can do for himself and his team. You know, he’s a real great player. I think one of the best in this league.”
Williams said Gibbs is the best player in his position and deserves to be the highest-paid running back based on his numbers.
