Frances Tiafoe and Brandon Nakashima will duke it out in an all-American semifinal showdown at the Cincinnati Open 2026.
Tiafoe eased past Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in his first match in Cincinnati, and needed three sets to handle 16th seed Learner Tien. He beat second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal date with 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Tiafoe overcame a break deficit in the opening set, and then outplayed Musetti in the tie-break to claim the opener. He went up a break in the second set and served for the match at 5-4. However, he couldn’t close it out despite having a match point.
Sadly, Musetti’s efforts were in vain. Tiafoe broke his serve once again in the 11th game, and served out the match on his second try and on his fourth match point for a 7-6 (2), 7-5 win.
Nakashima commenced his campaign with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Aleksandar Kovacevic. He beat fourth seed Daniil Medvedev as well as Nuno Borges in three sets to make the last eight, where he faced sixth seed Taylor Fritz.
The first set was an extremely close affair. Both players held a set point in the tie-break but it was Nakashima who had the last laugh in the end. After zero breaks of serve in the first set, Fritz grabbed the first and the only break of the second set to claim the set. He struck first in the third set to go 3-2 up, only for Nakashima to nab the next four games to score a 7-6 (9), 4-6, 6-3 win.

Tiafoe played yet another solid match to reach his first Masters 1000 semifinal of the season and his second in Cincinnati. He finished as the runner-up to Jannik Sinner here in 2024. He has a 36-15 record this year, and a 20-9 record on hardcourts.
Nakashima tallied his third consecutive three-set win to reach a second consecutive Masters 1000 semifinal. He lost to Ben Shelton in the Canadian Open final a few days ago, and made the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open before that.
Nakashima’s win over Fritz also marked his fourth against a top 10 player since June 2026. He had a 2-22 record against them prior to that. He has posted a 31-16 record this year, and has a 22-9 record on hardcourts.
Even though Tiafoe has won six of his seven matches against Nakashima, he has never faced this version of his younger rival. The latter’s newfound consistency on his forehand and serve, having won 80 percent of his first serve points on average in Cincinnati, has transformed his game. He has been on a roll this summer, and will be the favorite to reach his second consecutive Masters 1000 final.
