New details have emerged about the tensions that led to Brady Tkachuk’s departure from the Ottawa Senators.
Brady’s trade had been a long time coming and became inevitable after he reportedly demanded a trade just over a week after the Senators’ first-round playoff series sweep at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.
That was not the only reason for Brady’s departure. Insider Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen has provided more details on why the trade was inevitable.
According to Garrioch, Tkachuk had grown tired of being in Ottawa, while the organization had become tired of the constant “Captain America” narrative that followed him, especially after his strong performance at the Olympics and the public moments that followed while representing the United States.
“This was going to happen one way or another, and that’s just the reality of the situation,” Garrioch wrote. “Tkachuk wasn’t going to finish out his contract in Ottawa. The Senators were getting tired of the ‘Captain America’ narrative that followed Tkachuk, and he was sick of being here.”
After spending eight seasons in the Canadian capital, Brady Tkachuk was traded to the Florida Panthers, where he reunited with his brother Matthew. Brady amassed 59 points (22 goals, 37 assists) in 60 games this past season.

Brady Tkachuk served as the captain of the Senators for just over four seasons. Now that he is gone, the captaincy has become vacant. According to Bruce Garrioch, the names being considered are Tim Stutzle, Jake Sanderson, and Thomas Chabot.
“Thomas Chabot is a top candidate to be named the next captain, along with blueliner Jake Sanderson; Tim Stützle’s name has also surfaced as a possibility.”
Stutzle, who has previously served as an assistant captain, believes the Senators have several players who can lead the team:
“I don’t think a whole lot changed for us. I think we always had great leaders in the room, so there’s not one guy who has to be the guy. We have so many guys who lead the team well where everybody has an open ear for anyone.”
The Senators are expected to announce their new captain before the start of the new season. There’s also a possibility that the role remains vacant for a longer period.
