How to Fish gives you the simple task of fishing on different islands and a collection of different tools to get this done. You also get a boat with some features to help you in the process. However, as you progress in the game, you will need to upgrade your boat’s gear.
You cannot swim across the water to reach new areas and have to earn your first boat and buy your radar by completing tasks and selling fish. Upgrading your boat and radar makes it much easier to find new islands and finish the game. Whether you are trying to reach the end of the game or attempting a speedrun, understanding how to upgrade your boat in How to Fish is very important in both cases.
How to upgrade the boat and radar in How to Fish

Your adventure begins on the Lighthouse island. Before you can explore other areas, you need to earn your first boat by catching fish and purchasing a knife to defeat the Spider Crab boss.
Once you defeat this first enemy, collect its meat and hand it over to the Lighthouse Keeper. In return for the crab meat, the Lighthouse Keeper will reward you with the keys to your first boat. This allows you to finally leave the starting area and travel across the water.
Before you set sail, you also need a tool to navigate the map. You can purchase the basic radar from the Lighthouse Keeper for $10, which you can easily earn by selling fish. However, this early version of the radar is a handheld item. This means you have to actively hold it in your hands to see where you are going, preventing you from holding weapons or fishing rods at the same time.
Managing a handheld radar becomes annoying as you progress and face tougher challenges. Luckily, before you head to the fourth island known as The Rocks, you can visit the local shop for a much needed improvement.
You can purchase an upgrade that permanently mounts the radar screen directly onto your boat. This helpful upgrade frees up your hands, allowing you to easily view the map while keeping your weapons ready.
The final transportation upgrade happens at the very end of the game on Volcano island. After you climb the volcano and defeat the final boss, the Mutated Bowhead Whale, you need to collect its fin. Take this fin back down the mountain and present it to the character wearing a yellow hazmat suit. Handing over the fin rewards you with the keys to the military boat.
Unlike your regular boat, the military boat is not meant for fishing or exploring the map. Instead, you use it solely to travel back to the mainland. Boarding this boat concludes the main story and rolls the end credits. Even after taking the military boat, you can reload your save file to keep catching fish with all of your earned upgrades.
