McLaren and Lando Norris have announced a multi-year contract extension as the partnership is now set to extend beyond the 2030 F1 season. The British driver’s name was not the one that was arguably one of the jigsaw pieces for this year’s silly season.
The driver had already signed a multi-year extension some time back, and it was rumored to extend until the 2028 F1 season. With the current extension, Lando Norris takes his stint with McLaren to a period where he would be part of the squad for more than a decade.
The reigning F1 champion debuted with the team in 2019, and since then, he has been on a journey where both the driver and the team continue to grow. This journey reached the pinnacle in 2025 when the McLaren-Lando Norris partnership swept both the titles.
The current announcement comes after the back-to-back wins for Lando Norris in Hungary and Zandvoort as he tries to stitch together an unlikely title campaign. Talking about his contract extension, Lando Norris admitted McLaren has always been his home, and his aim continues to be to achieve success with the team. He said,
“McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030.”
He added,
“When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win championships. We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we’re capable of achieving it.”
Zak Brown on Lando Norris signing an extension with McLaren
With Lando Norris continuing his commitment to McLaren until 2030, the team is now looking at a scenario where the lead driver is going to continue being a part of the team for almost as long as CEO Zak Brown has been in charge. The British driver started racing with the squad in 2019, and Brown took over in 2018. Talking about the extension, Brown said,
“His journey with the team is a fantastic example of our commitment to identifying, developing and supporting world-class talent, and his achievements speak for themselves.”
The partnership did not get off to the best start in 2026, with McLaren struggling to get on top of the Mercedes power unit. With the team slowly starting to find its feet and Norris winning the last two races, the momentum is back with the team as it tries to reclaim its position as the benchmark in F1.
