Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could not believe it after the Michigan Wolverines narrowly avoided an upset against the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday night. The Wolverines had lost the game before the officials reviewed the play, giving them another chance to make a comeback.
Quarterback Bryce Underwood and wide receiver JJ Buchanan combined to clinch a win for the Wolverines with no time on the clock. Mahomes shared his reaction to the insane finish on X on Saturday.

After the Wolverines scored a touchdown in the first quarter, the Broncos scored four field goals to make it 12-7 with just 35 seconds on the clock. Kyle Whittingham and Co. found itself with the ball at Western Michigan’s 47-yard line with just seven seconds remaining.
Underwood launched a deep ball toward the back of the end zone, but the pass sailed incomplete out of bounds. The clock ticked down to 0:00 while the ball was still in the air. The Broncos’ players and coaches stormed onto the field, celebrating what would have been their first win over Michigan since 2008.
However, the officiating crew blew the whistles to stop the celebration and announced an official replay review. After watching the replay monitor, the refs ruled that one second should be put back on the clock.
The conference later issued a statement explaining that Western Michigan defensive back Micah Davis jumped out of bounds and made contact with the football before it hit the turf. By NCAA rule, touching an out-of-bounds player immediately kills the play.
The Wolverines got a second chance from the 47-yard line with 0:01 on the clock. Underwood threw a walk-off Hail Mary touchdown to snatch a 13-12 win for the Wolverines.
Patrick Mahomes faces offensive line concern ahead of regular-season opener
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is entering his 10th season with the team after recovering from an offseason knee surgery. The two-time NFL MVP is expected to start the Chiefs’ Week 1 game against the Denver Broncos later this month.
However, Kansas City could be without left tackle Josh Simmons, who is still dealing with a back injury. Former Chiefs offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz raised concerns about how Simmons’ absence could affect Mahomes.
“I would expect Mahomes to play well, but as you mentioned, Josh Simmons is a problem,” Schwartz said. “It seems like the back injury issue is continuing to linger. You would like to see him practice this week as they head into game week.”
Schwartz also pointed to the uncertainty at right tackle as another concern for Kansas City’s offensive line. Simmons’ potential absence could force the Chiefs to make changes up front and may affect their offensive game plan against Denver in Week 1.
