Angel Reese created history on Saturday, becoming the first WNBA player to record 500 rebounds in a single season. She reached the milestone during the Atlanta Dream‘s 106-81 win over the Chicago Sky. However, the occasion drew mixed reactions from fans, who were divided over Reese accomplishing the feat.
The WNBA’s official handle highlighted Reese reaching the 500-rebound mark on X (formerly Twitter).
“FIVE. HUNDRED. REBOUNDS. 🤯 Angel Reese becomes the first player in WNBA history to reach 500 rebounds in a single season!” the handle captioned the post.
The WNBA shared the post alongside a graphic, which quickly turned heads online. Reactions were mostly divided among fans, with many celebrating the momentous occasion.
“Angel Reese the BEST EVER!! Hall of Fame, get her spot ready!!” a fan wrote.
However, some fans downplayed Reese’s achievement, highlighting that many of her rebounds came off her own missed shots.
“499 missed layups,” another fan added.
While Reese’s 500 rebounds earned mixed reactions, the feat itself is impressive. The first-ever player to reach this mark, Reese did so in style, dropping her 31st double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
Shooting 9-of-13 from the field, Reese also added three blocks and two steals as the Dream forward led her team to victory against her former team. The win kept Atlanta in fourth place, 0.5 games ahead of the Indiana Fever and 0.5 games behind the Las Vegas Aces in third place.
Already qualified for the postseason, the Dream will hope to climb the standings and secure home-court advantage as Reese prepares for her first playoff series.
Angel Reese opened up about wanting to play the “first round” days before reaching the 500-rebound mark
Angel Reese continues to set new records as the forward remains one of the WNBA’s most consistent young players. After reaching the 500-rebound mark on Saturday, Reese has been on fire since returning from the World Cup, recording a double-double in under 25 minutes in her first game back.
Following that win, Reese reflected on her performance while expressing her desire to play in the first round.
“I was ready to play today,” Reese said. “Especially with this team knowing how good we are, knowing how I felt after the last win against Minnesota.
“I want to play first round right now. But obviously, we just have to continue to be ready and look forward to these games right now, and then get ready for the playoffs.”
Having missed out on the playoffs in her first two seasons, Reese is set to make her postseason debut in her first year with the Atlanta Dream.
