WWE SmackDown returns to Indianapolis, Indiana, this week with an action-packed card as we gear up for the Money in the Bank premium live event. The main event scene on the Blue brand is chaotic, and fans can expect the nail-biting drama to continue in the upcoming episode.
WWE has advertised several exciting matches for SmackDown, including two triple threat matches, with the winner of each qualifying for their respective Money in the Bank contract ladder matches. The WWE United States Championship will be defended in the show, which will also feature appearances from Cody Rhodes and the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion, Sami Zayn. With so many high-voltage matches on the card, this week’s SmackDown seems to be a must-watch.

#4 Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn appear
Last week, Sami Zayn somehow managed to walk away with his Undisputed WWE Championship following an interference by CM Punk during his title defense against Kevin Owens. While Punk is set for a match on the upcoming show, the WWE Universe will get to hear from Sami Zayn regarding what went down last week. As of now, he is not scheduled for a match at the Money in the Bank PLE, but the situation can change quickly depending on what happens tonight. Kevin Owens is not someone to let go of things easily, and he may demand another shot at Zayn.
Also, Johnny Gargano was somewhat promised a title opportunity by the champion following his successful title defense against KO, and he may want to cash in on that opportunity as well.
Cody Rhodes is scheduled to appear on SmackDown, though it is not confirmed whether he will be in action. He delivered an intense promo last week while in conversation with Michael Cole, and WWE will be following up on that for sure.
#3 Huge women’s Money in the Bank qualifier set
On the upcoming episode of SmackDown, the fifth spot in the women’s Money in the Bank contract ladder match will be filled as Giulia, Charlotte Flair, and Lash Legend compete in a triple threat battle for the opportunity. All three women are former champions and hungry for a shot at the top title.
Flair has been missing from the title picture for quite some time now, a place where she has proven to thrive. With her ally Alexa Bliss failing to earn the opportunity, she may pull out all measures to win this triple threat.
For Giulia and Legend, a spot at the ladder match could solidify their position on the card and pave the way for them to win their first World Title.
#2 One final match for the title?
After months of back-and-forth for the title, it seems WWE would finally conclude the rivalry between Trick Williams and Baron Corbin. On the upcoming episode of SmackDown, the two are set to clash in a high-voltage Steel Cage match for the WWE United States Championship.
The Lone Wolf returned to WWE just a few months back and engaged in a feud with Williams. Fans were shocked to see him win the US Title at SummerSlam from the up-and-coming star, but in just 35 days, he dropped the gold back to Trick at Sunday Night’s Main Event.
Despite the title loss at SummerSlam, this rivalry showcased that Williams can outsmart a vetted legend in the ring, and after this Steel Cage match, we may see him fight someone new.
#1 Money in the Bank winner possibly revealed on SmackDown?
In an epic showdown, CM Punk will square off against two former World Champions, Finn Balor and Gunther, for the fifth spot in the men’s Money in the Bank contract ladder match. Including Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, the five men have been going back and forth at the Undisputed WWE Championship, and winning this match, in one way, guarantees a shot at the top title.
The other confirmed participants of the ladder match are Penta, Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams, and Bron Breakker. They are eager to make a name for themselves and put everyone on notice, but they lack the mindset and experience to handle tense situations as former World Champions do. Punk, Balor, and Gunther have main-evented multiple PLEs in the past and have plenty of experience in ladder matches.
In fact, CM Punk is a two-time MITB contract winner, which would give him a significant advantage in the match once he qualifies. It seems that whoever wins the triple threat on this week’s SmackDown may very well go on to win this year’s men’s Money in the Bank contract as well.
