Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher does not think Manchester United should sack Michael Carrick this year. He believes the Englishman is unlikely to stay in the job for long, but he does not see the need for an immediate change.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher claimed Manchester United are using Carrick as a manager to steady the ship before bringing in another manager. He added that the decision should not be made soon, as the former Middlesbrough manager needs more time and said:

“I think it would be ludicrous to get rid of Michael Carrick. I don’t see Michael Carrick as the Manchester United manager in the long term. I almost feel like he’s in there doing a job for the club to get them through a rocky period and then passing the baton on.”
“If that sounds disrespectful to him, I don’t mean it like that. He came in, and Man United needed calm. I don’t think the idea of changing Michael Carrick now or at the next international break makes sense. It just needs to be relaxed, just let him get on with it.”
The Red Devils appointed Michael Carrick on a permanent deal this year, after he impressed as an interim manager at the end of the 2025/26 season.
Michael Carrick not feeling the pressure at Manchester United
Michael Carrick spoke about his future at Manchester United, saying that he does not see any reason to worry. He claimed that it was ridiculous to report that his job is hanging by a thread and said:
“I think that’ll be a lot longer than one or two games of results. In terms of future and ownership and how long I’ve got in the job, I’m not thinking ‘how long have I got?’ It’s ridiculous to think that way in a position that I’m in.”
“That’s just not on the radar. It’s two or three games that we haven’t had certain results, and two or three games too many because I really hate losing. But that doesn’t mean that the world caves in.” (via ESPN)
Manchester United have won just once in their opening five Premier League matches – a 5-2 win at Old Trafford against newly promoted side Ipswich Town. They sit 12th in the table after losing to Hull City and Manchester City, and drawing with Everton and Fulham.
The Red Devils are also out of the Carabao Cup after losing to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
