Fernando Alonso has announced on Tuesday, September 29, that he will continue racing for Aston Martin beyond 2026 as he has signed a contract extension with the British team for 2027. The Spaniard made the announcement in a unique way, reflecting on his career before saying that he will retire from F1, but not yet.
Alonso’s future with Aston Martin and in F1 as a whole was unknown as the driver’s contract with the team was ending in 2026. But now, the 2x world champion has put pen to paper, and the same was announced by him in a unique video, which made many believe that the Spaniard may be retiring at first.
“F1 has been great to me. I’ve had an incredible career, traveled around the world, raced for more than 23 years, more than 400 Grands Prix. And I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamt of. It took me a little bit of time to make my decision. But now, I have things very clear in my mind. I will retire from Formula 1… But not yet,” said Alonso.
“I still feel fast and motivated. I still have huge passion for Formula 1 and for the sport. So, I am so happy to keep racing in the highest category and it is my life,” he added.
Also on Tuesday, Aston Martin confirmed that Lance Stroll will also continue racing for the team in 2027, finally confirming the Silverstone-based team’s driver lineup for next year. Both drivers will enter their fifth year together as teammates at the outfit.
An official statement from Aston Martin read that both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso will share their “valuable depth of racing knowledge and technical insight” as the team continues to try and build throughout 2026 and beyond.

In an official statement after the contract extension announcement, Fernando Alonso has shared that he is “committed for the long term” at Aston Martin. The 45-year-old said that he still believes in the project and also praised the leadership and the personnel at the team.
“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin Aramco… I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed,” said Alonso.
“I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities.”
Fernando Alonso also added that the energy he receives from his fans and the atmosphere they create is what inspires him to continue racing.
Meanwhile, Lance Stroll also said that the hard work and determination from those working at Aston Martin is what served as his motivation to continue to drive for the team beyond 2026. The Canadian F1 driver added that he fully believes that the outfit is headed in the right direction.
