Team India thumped the West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI in Guwahati on Wednesday, September 30. With the victory, they also won the series 2-0 with one match to spare.
Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first. The West Indies put up a spirited batting effort, posting a huge total of 405/7 on the back of centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo.
However, even a total in excess of 400 did not prove to be enough as India made light work of the target. They got over the line in just 43.3 overs, completing a smooth and one-sided run chase. Gill led from the front with an unbeaten 223 off just 133 balls, while veteran Rohit Sharma also scored a hundred, making 101 runs off just 75 balls.
That said, let us take a look at five huge records that the Men in Blue achieved following their stunning victory.
#1 India’s highest successful chase in ODIs
406 was the highest successful target chased by India in ODIs. This was the first time that they chased a total in excess of 400. They bettered their previous record of the highest successful chase in the format, which came against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.
In that game, Australia made 359/5. The Men in Blue chased 360 runs in just 43.3 overs with nine wickets to spare. Rohit Sharma (141*) and Virat Kohli (100*) scored unbeaten centuries, while Shikhar Dhawan scored 95.
#2 Second-highest successful chase in ODIs overall
India’s chase of 406 runs is the second-highest successful chase in ODIs overall. It was also only the second occasion where a total in excess of 400 was successfully chased.
The record for the highest successful chase in ODIs is held by South Africa against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006. Australia put up a huge total of 434/4 batting first. The Proteas chased it down, getting to 438/9, winning by just one wicket and with one ball remaining.
#3 Most 400-plus totals by a team in ODIs
As a result of the successful chase, India crossed the 400-run mark for the ninth time in ODIs. This is the most 400-plus totals made by any team in the format. The Men in Blue were previously tied with South Africa at eight 400-plus scores. However, they overtook them to claim the record.
England has made 400-plus seven times in ODIs. Apart from these three teams, no other nation has scored in excess of 400 more than five times. Australia have done it thrice, while New Zealand and Sri Lanka have done it twice each.
#4 Fastest team 300 in an ODI (by overs)
India also broke the record for the fastest team 300 in an ODI in terms of balls taken. The Men in Blue got to the 300-run mark in just 29.1 overs. They had made 92 in the first ten overs itself, and there was no looking back after a solid start.
The record for the fastest team 300 in ODIs was previously held by South Africa, which they had achieved in 32.2 overs during their historic run chase in the Johannesburg ODI against Australia in 2006. Therefore, the Men in Blue became the only team to get to 300 in less than 30 overs.
#5 Highest partnership for any wicket against WI in ODIs
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma got the hosts off to a magnificent start in the chase, setting it up nicely with a massive 255-run stand for the first wicket. Their partnership was the highest for any wicket against the West Indies in ODIs, going past the 247-run stand between Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw in 2015.
Moreover, their 255-run stand was also the second-highest opening partnership for India in ODIs. They narrowly missed out on breaking the record, which is held by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who scored a 258-run partnership against Kenya in 2001.
